Identification of breast tumors from diathermy smoke by DMS

Maiju Sutinen used DMS to identify carcinoma samples from breast tumors. Benign and malignant tumors were able to be identified using diathermy-based sampling, laying foundation for intraoperative margin assessment with DMS from surgical smoke. The study has been published in the European Journal of Surgical Oncology!

Breast cancer biopsies were incised with a diathermy blade controlled by an automatic tissue analysis system (ATAS). A total of 106 carcinoma samples from 21 malignant breast tumors were analyzed with 198 benign samples. Benign samples included macroscopically normal mammary gland, adipose tissue, and vascular tissue. A classification accuracy of 87 % between the malignant and benign samples was achieved.
